Welcome to Yoga & Writing! We are a new community with a podcast, courses, and retreats coming soon. Stay tuned for ideas, tips, and conversations.
These first few weeks, I’m sharing the origins of this project and orienting you in my approach. Soon, I’ll be sharing ideas, also in podcast form, from a variety of angles: practical, philosophical, cultural, historical, or literary. Additionally, I’ll alternate these articles with community discussion threads. Another part of the newsletter and podcast will bring you fun and meaningful ways to deepen your practice to start each week.
If you want to check out some of my other writing, please visit The Matterhorn: intersections of literature & art (also a podcast) or my author website.
Why I write
I think all of us who write ask ourselves the question: why do we do it? And those of us who don’t (yet) might wonder about the benefits.
I’ve got a (very raw) video answer below attempting to explain my own reasons. However, it’s constantly evolving, and it’s an answer I imagine will change a lot more during this project. I’ve written a few articles about the reasons we write, including “Why Spend Your Time Writing?” (The Writing Cooperative) and “Writing Toward Immortality” (The Matterhorn).
Beyond being a professional writer, these are the main reasons I write:
To think
To live — to experience the world on a deeper level
To seek peace and balance
To be in touch with myself and my emotions
To be a part of a community (& humanity) and communicate
To assert my identity and access my authenticity
Please let us know in the comments why you write!
Thanks for checking out Yoga & Writing, a new community with a podcast, courses, and retreats coming soon. These next introductory posts will help you to get the most out of the community and understand my approach. I would be grateful if you share this post with anybody who might connect with our ethos or be curious about something new!
It's always an interesting question: "Why do we write?" But I have to say, I always wonder what other people who don't write do with all the stuff in their heads! I also write to 'think' and I would say that is one of my essential motivators too. So many times, I haven't been able to sort out my feelings or ideas about something until I have written it out. This is usually just for myself to begin with, but it feeds into everything else that I do. I think the other main reason I write is to connect with other people. When you have all these ideas about something that interests you (as I do with books, literature, women, writers, culture, history...) it's just a joy to be able to share it with others.
Thanks for another thought provoking post! I can feel that this space is going to be somewhere to really slow down and think!
Lovely.
To seek peace and balance -- this one speaks to me the most.
